Don Covay & The Goodtimers 'Mercy!' (1965) Don's brazen vocal style obviously influenced many a white, British R'n'B star, but you can believe me when I say, he is the real deal. You'll be satisfied!
"...1964's "Mercy Mercy," was cut with a then-unknown Jimi Hendrix on guitar, and went on to crack the Billboard Top 40 ..." Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
I wish I had my copy of the LP in front of me...as I remember (according to the Hendrix discography book 'Black Gold' there are about four or five cuts that feature Jimi on this LP. Apparently (the story goes)a couple of years down the road Booker T. & MGs guitar playing great Steve Cropper had the chance to meet Jimi in his prime and mentioned the song 'Mercy Mercy' to him and Jimi had the pleasure of fessing up that the riff was his and was able to teach it on the spot to the gobsmacked Cropper who had struggled with figuring it out. Don Covay is such an underestimated soul monster. There's so much inj his catalog that is great; not the least of which is his 'underground' LP, the last he did on Atlantic, as The Blind Lemon Jefferson Blues Band. Well worth searching out and posting, don't you think? I would if I still had it. That book, 'Black Gold" ( I had it in my hand in a discount bnook store but still didn't have enough money to buy it...wish I had)also mentions that Jimi played on a Jayne Mansfield record...weird, humh?
Yes, thanks Duncan for the info. I thought Jimi was only on Mercy, but it makes sense as I thought he was doing other session work at the time. Cheers!

Duncan - cool anecdote, thanks, Jimi and Steve Cropper in one story, that's a pretty damn good double feature.
